Photo Usage
We have allowed for pictures to be used freely in the past. However, this year we have run into a new situation. As the world turns more to social networking, people want to share their experiences using images. While this is fun for most, it does cause some issues when dealing with minors. Many parents do not allow their younger kids to have social networking accounts like Facebook, etc.
I, as the photographer and web site manager have maintained copyrights to all content on the site including the photos made available via the web site. I have sat on the Los Altos School District committee reviewing online guidelines. Given the desires of some parents, we would not have any online presence. I try to manage the careful balance of privacy, convenience and fun. As many are aware, I password protect the access to photos. In doing so, I believe we establish the trust of the parents that we will treat their privacy seriously. At the same time we want to provide access to all of these special moments not just on the web site, but also at home and relatives. Previously we protected all pictures using technology that only allowed viewing. This was met with much frustration from parents who wanted to print copies of the pictures.
Now that we make them available for download, it has come to our attention that some are publishing pictures on their accounts like Facebook. Due to the age and privacy, we are informing all, that pictures should not be posted electronically without prior consent by the copyright holder. You are granted rights to download and print pictures as well as load on digital display devices at home, but not sites accessible from the Internet. This will allow us to continue to maintain the trust of the parents and swimmers and thereby getting those fun moments. The ability to have people feel free to act silly, is directly linked to the knowledge that the pictures will not be out there for all to see.
Therefore, do not post any pictures without prior consent from the photographer. Download, print and get creative and most importantly have fun with them. Address questions/comments to the photographer using the contacts links.
